What Are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are small, red, purple, and blue vessels that are easily visible through the skin. They are typically common on the legs and face.
Varicose veins are raised, swollen blood vessels that usually develop in the legs, can be seen through the skin, and are larger than spider veins.
Common causes for varicose and spider veins are:
- Occupations that involve a lot of standing
- Hormonal influences of pregnancy
- Use of birth control pills.
Varicose veins require complex treatment usually performed by vascular surgeon. Spider veins, on the other hand, are not considered a significant health concern; they are aesthetically unpleasant and can be treated with laser treatment or sclerotherapy.
How Are Spider Veins Treated?
Spider veins could be treated with Sclerotherapy or lasers depending on the size and location of the veins. The blue spider veins located in the lower extremities could be treated with the sclerotherapy. The red spider veins located on the extremities and the face could be treated with the laser.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a procedure that has been available since the 1930s. It involves an injection of a specific solution (usually highly concentrated salt or another detergent) directly into the vessel, which causes the vein to fade gradually in 3 to 6 weeks.
This fairly safe sclerotherapy procedure is simple to perform, relatively inexpensive, usually doesn’t require anesthesia, and is performed in our NYC office.
